Engaging with stakeholders is an ever more important component of research projects. To foster successful exchange with actors from beyond academia, every step of the journey should be carefully planned – from the proposal stage to the different projects phases and the integration of stakeholder knowledge into the results.

I currently lead the work packages for Stakeholder Engagement & Communication in two large EU projects focusing on the marine environment and nature-based solutions (NBS). Together with project partners from Europe and Central America I plan, coordinate and implement stakeholder engagement strategies across the entire lifespan of our projects. Due to recent developments, I also consider the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and develop the alternatives to physical meetings we now need.

My personal toolbox includes blueprints for engagement planning and coordination that can be applied to existing projects and adjusted for new ones, whether already funded or still in the proposal stage. In addition to this practical work, I also conduct social scientific research on the perspectives of marine scientists on engaging with stakeholders.
